To Mr. Sullivan should go the credit of retracing almost all the old paths to the hills, within their contours and making them suitable for what was in those days known as “wheeled traffic”. As the Collector of Coimbatore District of which Nilgiris formed a part and later as Senior member of the Board of Revenue, based at Ooty and directly accountable only to the Governor, Mr Sullivan became the forerunner of the network of roads in the Nilgiris. Forts of the Nilgiris

The forts of Nilgiris reflect its chequered history. The Nilgiris formed part of different kingdoms, at different times. The Cheras and the Cholas lend contending claims to it as far back as the first millenium A.D. Much later it was embroiled in the dynastic feuds of the kingdoms of Southern Mysore and Malabar. Various kings of the region were titular possessors of the hills for a long time. The Hoysalas were the first to exploit the hills for its resources. Read more>>
